We recently celebrated International Women’s Day, where we found ourselves at a crossroads of reflection and action. This year’s theme, “Inspire Inclusion”, compelled us to not only raise awareness but to actively champion the value of women’s contributions in the dynamic tech sector.
At Interactive we embrace this call with open arms, recognising that diversity and inclusion fuel innovation.
With this in mind, here are three ways we believe we can foster inclusion within the technology sector:
“Inspire inclusion through action” is our rallying cry in the bustling technology landscape. The imperative to bridge the gender gap is underscored by the stark reality that women constitute only 15 per cent of the STEM workforce.
As technology leaders, it falls upon us to dismantle barriers and foster an environment where talent knows no boundaries, and where potential surpasses experience.
Consider the inspiring journey of Dee Breakell, Lead Threat Intelligence Analyst at Slipstream Cyber (part of Interactive). Moving from agriculture to cybersecurity, she demonstrates the versatility of skills across sectors, highlighting the importance of cultivating diverse perspectives.
“Moving from agriculture to cybersecurity, I’ve found that the risk mitigation, risk management and critical thinking skills I honed while navigating an unpredictable farming environment, and other such challenges, remain at the core of my role. Whether it’s defending against cyber threats or mitigating digital risks, my experience in agriculture has equipped me with a unique perspective and skill set crucial to tackling the dynamic landscape of cybersecurity.”
Sometimes you need to pick your kids up from school. Other times you need to take an elderly parent to a medical appointment. This is especially true for women given that 70 per cent of primary carers in Australia are women. Within this group, 63 per cent participate in the workforce.
This is why, in our pursuit of inclusivity, we must not overlook the power of flexibility. At Interactive, we champion flexible work arrangements. We genuinely support and respect employees who block time in their calendars to attend to personal and family commitments.
We are keen to catalyse a shift in societal norms by accommodating the multifaceted roles that both men and women undertake, enabling effective work-life balance without compromise. Creating greater opportunity and acceptance for men to play an equal role at home is a non-negotiable if we are to enable women to accelerate their growth at the critical mid stage of their career. Not only does this help to create a more supportive environment for employees, but it is also good for business.
Don’t underestimate the power of a mentor; someone who believes in you more than you believe in yourself. I have carried this piece of advice with me throughout my career and shared it with others at every opportunity.
Interactive’s commitment to fostering an inclusive culture is evident through mentorship programs and sponsorship initiatives. Every woman is encouraged to find her voice, her path, and her place at the table, with the support of someone who believes in her more than she believes in herself.

Our strategic Pathways program is also an excellent example. It’s designed to create opportunities for underrepresented groups and has been successful with our cadets entering the technology industry after 14 weeks of hands-on experience. The next phase of Pathways, “From the Land to the Cloud,” in collaboration with AWS, focuses on empowering First Nations communities. This unique program combines formal training and on-the-job learning, paving the way for a more diverse and inclusive technology industry.
